The Military is an occupation that features a lot of change. The particular duty station that you are assigned to can change, and when it does you can be required to move on a fairly regular basis. You can be forced to have to move, and in some ratings or military specialties this can be fairly often. If this happens there are specific benefits that can aid a Servicemember in the financial requirements of changing your active duty or Temporary active duty station.
You can be eligible for getting some of your pay in advance, to help you with your move. While you may be blessed to be assigned to a particular duty station for a long period of time, often as a military Servicemember you are required to change your duty station, and change fairly often. This can make most people struggle because they do not have the means to pay for their relocation, and they can find themselves in a real financial crisis. You can choose to apply for up to three months of your base pay at either your new assigned duty station or your old duty station. This is voluntary, and its not something that you have to do, you can choose to pay for your own move and not get any kind of pay or allotment advance. This is not mandatory in any way, so if you do choose to apply for assistance, it is entirely up to you if you do, and for how much. Because you are applying for a pay advance, it is a type of military advance loan, and because of this it must be eventually paid back. It is typically paid back over a period of time by a paycheck monthly deduction. Military Service paymasters and financial officers recommend that you not apply for any pay advance that you do not need. You can wait 30 days to start the deduction after the first advance is made, you do not have to repay it right away.

There are also payments available to Servicemembers called the Monetary allowance in lieu of transportation, or MALT. Either program can assist a Servicemember who needs to travel to a new military change of station. It is important to consider how borrowing money will affect your move, and be sure to only borrow what you need.
