Years ago, there was a mandatory military draft that was enacted for the United States men, as there was a shortage of those that were in the military. The military draft was used as a means of making sure that there was enough coverage in the military for the locations that soldiers were needed. Military drafting has been used during such wars as the Vietnam War, when there was a substantial shortage of men and women that were signing up to join the military.

President Bush once stated that he would like to see the military draft come into action once more. This is because President Bush as well as many of his staff in congress also feel as though there is a not adequate amounts of troops that are present into the military today. This idea comes under great opposition from those that are against his administration’s war ideals, as well as those that are strongly against the current troops deployment in such countries as Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran.
Is a Military Draft Politically Even Possible?
At the current moment, it would take a lot of votes to have a military draft take place once again. It is believed that even if there was another idea for a draft to initiate, that there would be many Americans that would greatly oppose this, and would request that there are alternate methods for recruiting the American people into the military. It is believed that should there be a draft into the military again, that there would be those that would receive a number that may be selected from a random lottery type selection. Essentially, this would be almost the same, identical method that would be used for the first military draft that was created so many years ago.
It is believed that as long as there is a substantial amount of troops that are enrolling into the military, that there should not be a worry as to whether or not there will be a mandatory military draft that will take place. Recent months have shown a substantial increase in the amount of people that are signing up to enlist in the military, which is a sign of vast improvement for the military and their previous enlisting figures.
In reality, the quotas of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard are all easily met as for now. Many believe that it is due to the high unemployment. The amazing benefits such as on-the-job training, free college, VA loan benefits, to name only a few. However, if the draft ever did become necessary, it would obviously not be popular politically.
Finally, The Real Reason That Draft May Never Happen Again.
It is my opinion that the military draft may be long gone. Not necessarily due to the rising and falling unemployment rates. Although they are definitely critical factors. But mostly because of the abilities of online internet publications to reach and recruit military prospects over and beyond what the military can do on their own. Along with online video resulting from free enterprise, the masses of the young adult market can be reached within seconds. And smart recruiters know their ‘hot’ buttons!
I am against it. Reasons because we dont want our family members and our friends go away. I have family members in the military and its sad enough that they are in their hometown. But the pluses are that we get more people over there to protect our country.
I think that it’s a crazy idea. This question would not come into existence if we did not start the war in the first place.Yes i do sound very anti- war, but the difference between us and animals is the fact that we have a common communication between ourselves. Though, we have long forgotten that concept. However, if drafting for the military were to take place, I would love to see women getting drafted as well. I am a woman and I support the idea of myself getting drafted. Getting drafted, to me is our last step for women to acquire true equality in this country.
Iam completely against it. When I heard this I started to freak out. I don’t want to have to hear about the fact that my brothers died fighting when they don’t want to. I know wars are sometimes necessary, but I don’t think the people who never wanted to fight in the first place should be punished. I couldn’t imagine getting a draft letter saying that one of my brothers was leaving me. I know a lot of other people feel that way too. I don’t see why it is necessary to break families apart. I know that it may be necessary to protect our country, i just don’t want to see it happen.
hello. i am trying to find a letter or something of somebody that was drafted. whether they hated, respected, or however they felt towards it. Baby…noone will be drafted, don’t be silly. And Justin, if you are able why not join. It’s one of the things I’m most proud of. Happy Veteran’s Day to all my fellow Vet’s!
Is it not called rembrence day Lisa
In my oppinion a military draft is good for america because we can use all the troops we can get. we have many men and women in Iraq and Afganistan dieng for our country. The more troops that are fighting equals the less deaths because we will have more defensive action.President Bush even said he wants to see the military draft occur at least one more time.
I believe that military draft is a TERRIABLE idea. Looking through comments on various websites including the Wall Street Journel sit, I have found that many people who HAVE served in the military find it to be a ver bad idea! A former military officer stated “The draft is a VERY BAD idea, I am a former military officer and know well that the quality of troops have been descending since 9/11. THe best and brightest have been leaving the military since the beginning of this war instituting a draft will only make the situation worse” and another said “As a former military officer’ let me resoundingly say no to the draft. The job is diffacult enough with people who’ for varied reasons’ volunteered for the job. The diffaculties of war fighting would only be exacerbated by at best; a more reluctant pool of troops. FOr God’s sake’ leave it to the professionals. Salvve the guilt or indignation of lack or the “PRIVILEDGED” to serve another way.” Also’ it is said that forced service is a form of slavery, and I believe that we as a society are beyond that. This is not the way to go, andd I strongly believe that we will never have draft again. I think that there are more detrimental causes of draft then beneficial. And what about the health issues? Do you really want to draft someone with asthma? Or maybe isnt too healthy? What is someone already has their life planned out with the poeple they love? Your just taking that away from them. Not to mention the fact that schools would have to change their curiculm to PREPARE KIDS FOR WAR!You shouldn’t take kids away from their belief and educatin to fight a war.
I relish, lead to I discovered exactly what I was taking a look for. You have ended my four day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye
this country has gone to shit if the u.s starts drafting again im getting the hell out of here. like fuck ill let them draft me.
The politically powerful do ot want the draft because they want the wars fought with OPC – other peoples children. The politically powerful loved the draft and learned to love the bomb until the lottery came along and they realized their kid could go. Of course there were always children of the powerful like Deferment Dick Cheney and Rush Lameblob and his little mole.
I was drafted into the Army in 1966 when I was 19 years old. Six months later I was in the Vietnam War. I am 68 years old now and occasionally still have bad dreams/nightmares about being drafted again. I sure hope I am past the age where this could happen to me again!
yes we need the draft lottery the mititary keep sending the same boots on the grownd back in fourtht then something happen it alway going to be politicallyi i was in veitnam 68 69 .
I believe the draft should re in actedI also believe if the draft is reinstated that the military am will be in better I also believe that the fighting in the war be over now because of the vast number of troops that would be sent I also believe that is the draft is reinstated that the world will be a better place to be a safer place and It’ll will be a the land of the free again
If we are attacked on our turf will you defend this nation or run to Canada? It is the litmus test I ask people who claim to love America “conditionally.”
People need to travel to other countries to understand how good we have it here. For over 200 years people died defending freedom. If freedom is not worth dying for the US would never be here to begin with. Losing your life to ensure the next generation has the same freedoms may seem like a waste and wrong but it is what has made our country what it is today. It is why people travel here to start a life with hopes and dreams.
I am a woman, non confrontational for the most part, but I will gladly fight for each of you on this thread EVEN if we do not agree politically or on this subject matter. It is the principle that I am fighting for and my children and grandchildren are worth that fight as are everyone of you. I am a lousy shot though 🙂 I could use some help from my fellow Americans if I ever found myself in that situation…
Signed,
Texas patriot who came here as fast as possible from California!
Many of us take for granted the freedoms we so easily enjoy. Being born in this great country of ours we should stand ready to defend her in any way necessary. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is a fire that can not and will not be snuffed out. All Americans should stand ready for the coming storm, because a storm is coming, and prepare to defend our great nation.
I fully support the opportunity for a draft. I was denied enlistment and there’s nothing more I’d love than to serve my country. I was denied due to depression. By if a draft occurred that would be my open chance to serve.
