The advancement and promotion program in the US Coast Guard is very academic based. Of all the services, they have some of the most academically formal programs for enlisted promotion, including manuals and books for each level of enlisted rank. It does not matter your specialty or billet, for advancement there is likely both a study guide and an official US Coast Guard manual that covers the promotion. The Coast Guard revamped its system of petty officer advancement beginning in October of 2004. It now uses a educational advancement system for its enlisted ranks, and is designed to better teach the fundamental skills for each of its ratings and job specialties.
