Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Launch and Recovery) – ABE
Maintain flight deck catapult and arresting gear system. Depending on their position, these sailors wear yellow or green jerseys on the flight deck.
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) – ABF
Refuel aircraft on aircraft carrier flight decks or airfields. These sailors wear purple jerseys on the flight deck.
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) – ABH
Maintain flight deck catapult and arresting gear system. These sailors wear green or blue jerseys on the flight deck.
Aviation Machinist’s Mate – AD
Conduct maintenance on aircraft engines and other internal mechanical systems.
Aviation Support Equipment Technician – AS
Maintains and operates support equipment used in hangers and aviation operations.
Air Traffic Controller – AC
Communicates with pilots and directs airspace during flight operations.
Aerographer’s Mate – AG
Analyzes and disseminates weather changes within an area of operation
Aviation Structural Mechanic – AM
Maintains an aircraft’s landing gear, hydraulic system, and structural integrity.
Aviation Ordinanceman – AO
Maintains, transports, and loads all aviation weapon systems onboard an aircraft. These sailors wear red jerseys on the flight deck.
Aviation Electrician – AE
Repairs and maintains an aircraft’s electrical system.
Aviation Electronics Technician – AT
Conducts electronic repairs onboard Navy aircraft.
Aircrew Survival Equipmentman – PR
Maintain the survival gear onboard all aircraft.
Aviation Maintenance Administrationman – AZ
Responsible for all administrative needs for flight operations.
Boatswain’s Mate – BM
Muscle and backbone for all ship operations.
Builder – BU
Responsible for structural construction of all wood, masonry, and metal structures.
Construction Electrician – CE
Install all electrical needs within a construction project.
Construction Mechanic – CM
Maintain construction vehicles and heavy equipment.
Culinary Specialist – CS
Navy cook. One of the oldest rates in the Navy.
Cryptologic Technician (Collection) – CTR
Operate state-of-the-art cyber warfare systems to collect sensitive information.
Cryptologic Technician (Technician) – CTT
Maintain electronic sensors, collect data, and analyze systems in support of the Navy’s electronic warfare strategy.
Damage Controlman – DC
Highly trained Naval firefighters dedicated to conducting damage control operations. DCs are also responsible for onboard Navy ships’ Chemical, Biological, and Radiological (CBR) defense equipment.
Electrician’s Mate – EM
Maintain shipboard electrical systems, including power generation, distribution, and control systems.
Electrician’s Mate, Nuclear Power – EMN
Operate and control power generators and switchboards associated with nuclear reactors.
Electronics Technician – ET
Maintain all electronic equipment, such as RADAR, satellite communication, and navigation systems.
Electronics Technician, Nuclear Power – ETN
Maintain electronic systems part of a nuclear reactor.
Electronics Technician, Submarine Navigation – ETV
Responsible for operating and maintaining navigation equipment onboard submarines.
Engineering Aid – EA
Assist Navy construction engineers in developing construction plans, often drafting blueprints and ensuring proper measurements are recorded.
Engineman – EN
Responsible for maintaining a ship’s large combustible engines.
Equipment Operator – EO
Operate construction vehicles and heavy machinery.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal – EOD
Identify, diffuse, and eliminate any explosive threats in combat and at home. Often support local law enforcement should the need arise. This rate is considered part of the Special Warfare community.
Fire Controlman – FC
Operates and maintains shipboard weapon systems.
Gunner’s Mate – GM
Maintain and operate small arm and long barrel weapons aboard ships and shore facilities.
Gas Turbine Systems Technician, Electrical – GSE
Maintain electrical systems attached to gas turbine systems.
Gas Turbine Systems Technician, Mechanical – GSM
Maintain mechanical systems associated with gas turbine systems.
Hospital Corpsman – HM
Perform medical duties alongside doctors and nurses, sometimes individually as a highly trained Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC).
Hull Maintenance Technician – HT
Conduct metal work, welding, and structural repairs of a ship.
Information Systems Technician – IT
Operate communication equipment and maintain the digital network.
Intelligence Specialist – IS
Analyze and disseminate intelligence data in support of fleet operations.
Interior Communications Electrician – IC
Repair interior communication systems such as telephones, alarms, and sensors.
Legalman – LN
Supports the Judge Advocate General (JAG) as a paralegal.
Logistics Specialist – LS
Manages ship stores and provides logistic support for duty stations worldwide.
Machinist’s Mate – MM
Operate and repair propulsion machinery and auxiliary systems, like shipboard HVAC and small boat engines.
Machinery Repairman – MR
Machine tool operators and part manufacturers.
Mass Communication Specialist – MC
Responsible for all public affairs and media needs.
Master at Arms – MA
Conducts law enforcement and anti-terrorism operations around the world.
Mineman – MN
Detect and neutralize underwater mines.
Missile Technician – MT
Maintain the ballistic missile launch systems aboard Navy submarines.
Musician – MU
Members of the Navy Band, conducting performances all over the world.
Navy Diver – ND
Perform diving operations for underwater salvage, underwater welding, and inspection operations. This rate is considered part of the Navy Special Warfare community.
Operations Specialist – OS
Operate RADAR systems aboard Navy ships, tracking identified targets, and calculating battle capabilities.
Personnel Specialist – PS
Maintain the personnel records of members assigned to their command.
Quartermaster – QM
Maintain ship charts, track ship movements, and create navigation plans.
Religious Program Specialist – RP
Provide support to Navy Chaplains in their ministry. Chaplains cannot carry weapons; their Religious Program Specialist serves as their armed protection in combat situations.
Retail Services Specialist – RS
A new Navy rate responsible for maintaining the ship’s store, geedunk, and providing barbering services.
Sonar Technician, Surface – STG
Operate and maintain SONAR equipment onboard surface ships.
Sonar Technician, Submarine – STS
Operate and maintain SONAR equipment onboard submarines.
Special Warfare Boat Operator – SB
Conduct maritime operations in the open water, rivers, and waterways and support Navy SEAL operations. This rate is part of the Navy Special Warfare community.
Special Warfare Operator – SO
US Navy SEALs. Conduct special warfare operations worldwide, operating as the elite global fighting force. This rate is part of the Navy Special Warfare community.
Steelworker – SW
Operate equipment related to construction operations using metal materials.
Utilitiesman – UT
Install and maintain construction projects’ plumbing, compressed air, and fuel feed systems.
Yeoman – YN
Responsible for all administrative needs for assigned command. Work alongside Personnel Specialists (PS).
Yeoman Submarine – YNS
Responsible for all administrative needs aboard a submarine.
