The modern warships used by the United States Navy are able to cross seas in a shorter amount of time than ever in history. They also have the ability to stay out of port longer than ever. This is due in large part to the fact that the ships are powered with nuclear energy which needs to be maintained by the right people. The nuclear trained machinist mate is integral in making sure that the power plants operate correctly at all times.
