The rule of thumb for a Navy Mess specialist or Navy cook is that there is no ready rule of thumb. You may be tasked to; Prepare a variety of meals and arrange food for all different groups, and operate dining facilities and kitchens and various galleys, and working to manage and operate kitchen and living quarters on board ship, submarine or shore station. After attending Navy Boot camp for 9 weeks you will progress on to formal Class A school, where you receive instructions on basics and advanced food preparation and how to deal with and food different groups of people. You will have a lot of different training and job experiences working in Mess specialist in the Navy. You may work serving guests for a special Navy dinner on shore. Literally you may work in any situation in the Navy that involves serving food for different groups of people, your duty station can be any location that has Navy personnel. You will work to fix food from 5 to large groups up to several thousand. You will work in different situations and be taught food preservation, nutrition, dining and even how to manage scheduling entertainment management in certain situations.
The United States Navy always has an ongoing need for detailed, people oriented personnel who can work under pressure, that can roll with the punches and that can work to serve and prepare a meal. Working in the Navy as a mess management is a little like a three ring circus, and there is nothing as wonderful as completing a meal service, no matter what size of group that you are serving. You may be tasked to work aboard an Aircraft carrier, helping prepare meals for some of the 5 thousand crewmembers on board, or you could work aboard a destroyer, cooking and preparing meals for one of the 350 sailors on board.

Other types of duty can participate in may include; preparing menus and food for distinguished guests and dignitaries, keeping budgets and food service records, preparing a variety of meals for all different groups, working as a culinary affairs specialist for an officers mess, or Commanding Officer Mess. You have a job that has some of the most different and varied duty because all members and all people need to eat.
I’m interested in learning more about culinary positions in the Navy, I’m currently attending National Institute of Culinary Arts, 4 year program. I would like to complete this program, but would like informaiton about the reserves.

I was a Navy cook for 4 yrs. You will gain valuable experience in culinary arts. Most importantly, you will learn the true meaning of hard work, long hours, cleaning and kitchen discipline. Passion of cooking is one thing but cooking everyday for 12 to 14 hours during deployment may be to much to ask for the avarage passionate cook. I want to serve in the military as being a cook but I don’t want to go to war is there a chance that I could travel around the U.S instead of having to travel over seas in the military as a cook. Another thing I was wondering was how long would I have to serve in the military to be complete the whole process.
