Teens are often roped into joining the military at the thought of shooting things, guns and explosions. While these aspects of military recruitment do exist, it is not normally on the level that high school teens seem to think. Here are 5 of the more over exaggerated claims that are made regarding joining the Marines Corps.
1 – Many teens join the Marines because they are under the impression that their school will be completely paid for, when this is not always the case.
2 – Many teens join the Marines because they are under the impression that joining up is easier than simply trying to find a job.
3 – Many teens join the Marines because they are under the impression that they will automatically receive enlistment bonuses no matter what.
4 – Many teens join the Marines because they are under the impression that they can have any post or job that they want while enlisted.
5 – Many teens join the Marines because they are under the impression that they can travel all over the world with their company for free.
These reasons are not all true, I am only fourteen and I want to join bc of what it means o be a marine and the respect you get, and to do something with my life
i wish to join the marines to fight for my country and help those in need. BTW i am 14
Not true im only 12 and a female but I want ot be in the Marines because of the discipline, training, respect and your duty to serve my country in the time of war
I agree with all the comments above. im 19 and am enlisted and cant wait to rise to the challenge.
I agree but im undecided. im in the JROTC marine corps and i love it! but I dont know if i would want to go to the anvy coast guard or marines!
I am 16 and my brother is a Marine. I am writing a paper for my Journalism class on why teens decided to join the Military. If any of you could help me out, I would love to hear from you. Thank you!
I am 14 and i’ve already decided that I’m joining the marine corps. I want to better my country and serve. I have family members who have joined different branches of service and I’m ready to join now!
I am only thirteen, and when I watch and read information about the Marines, I get this feeling in my stomach that feels like I am being pushed towards this path. I feel it is my destiny, and duty, to join the Marines.
this isn’t exactly true.. i want to join the Marines because of what they stand for, not for what i can get. i am full of patriotism and wish to serve my country, state, county, and my family to the best of my ability. ooorah, Marines.. job well done
seems to me whoever published those reasons is not a teen and doesn’t know what forces drive teens to join. i also wanted to be a marine since i was 13.
Why are twelve, thirteen, and fourteen year olds making this decision right now? That’s weird. Explore other options don’t be so narrow minded. Btw I am a 19 year old enlisted recruit about to go out to boot camp soon so I mean just think about it. But college is completely free in the Marine Corps. Only books are not paid for. The number one reason people should want to join the Marines is because it represents The U.S.A.’s premier fighting force, also, it is the only branch that truly has deep brotherhood. Marines are family, not co-workers like the other branches. Just be ready for hell at boot camp it seriously is no joke. Don’t watch Jarhead or Blackhawk Down and make that decision. Really figure out what job you would be interested in and use the Marine Corps to your advantage. Don’t just go to a recruiter and say “SIGN ME UP AND GIVE ME A GUN” because you are all smarter than that. Study, get a great score on the ASVAB, and get a good job that you like. Trust me, my 92 allows me to get almost any job I want. USMC is the way to go.
the closest you can get to basic in movies is Full Metal Jacket that movie brings back so many memories everytime i see it.
thats not true im 14 im going to join the Marines… for the respect…..honor……protect this counrty from the worst….. we faced enough we dont need more
Most of what is said here is true. i am 12 but teens do this for many reasons, sometimes they do it to get scholarships without knowing the only way it will go to use is if you make it back. When you are part of these marines you are nothing but a puppet , if you do come back u will most likely have an injury, but people dont notice that the goverment dosent help people with these injuries they only pay with what you have served which is not that much.
To all you people who are saying a want to serve this country for the good of it, i laugh at it , america is a country with so much debt its not even funny. its not a great country at all. when people say they come here for freedom its not really well stated, america treats immigrants like crap and they usally work long hours, i would never in my life serve this country, if WWIII came i rather go to jail then serve. these young kids saying they are going to join, good luck with that hahaaha
Former SSgt. here..Formerly NCOIC of Processing AFEE’s Columbus Ohio, 1972…I have heard the talk of a large number of recruits and Recruiters and often find there is a different language being spoken by both that is hard to understand by both..Let me try and give a glimspe through the fog of the unknown…First of all, you have to successfully graduate Boot Camp..Next, once assigned your Primary Military Occupational Speciality or what we used to call an MOS you have to successfully pass your MOS School…Once you have successfully completed those challenges is where your Marine Corps Career begins..It is up to you to be successful, the Marine Corps will provide everything you need to reach that goal..Now, not everyone is cut out, or able, or capable, or physically capable, of meeting those intial goals, that is just the way it is. Same as Civilian life not everyone is cut out to be a Doctor or a Plumber but many try….But the Marine Corps may give you a chance to be successful in another area depending on your attitude and whether you tried to just skate through or worked very hard..If you worked very hard, then you may have nothing to regret…Next comes the real part of being a “Team Member” when you reach your first assignement once you passed your MOS School. Never think you can now slack off and think you have learned everything you have just learned the Basics,,that is why it is called “Basic Training”..Listen carefully to your Senior NCO’s and always work to the highest of your abilities and never stop learning and you will be successful..I had a Placard on my Desk which read “I have never heard of a dumb question!” If you are ever unsure of anything or not clear on an order or what is expected of you…Ask! Yes in some quarters this can mean a dressing down, but you will always remember what you are told after a dressing down, and that is the goal to help you remember and keep it in your brain…That is the advice I received from my Family… I come from a family of 9 successful Marines..My Father’s Father, My Father,, his Brothers, my three brothers, a combined total of 281 years of Service…Semper Fi
I am 17 years old and I do not plan on joining the Marines. I plan on joining the Army. Although some of you may not think that these are valid reasons for joining the Military, these are some of the reasons why people end up joining. Although you may not like the above statements, they are true in some cases. Having said that, none of these are why I plan on enlisting. I plan on enlisting because I cannot see myself doing anything other than joining the Army. I’ve always wanted to.
For me all those reasons are false if seen what the Marines stand for and I love the Marines history. My uncle is an active soldier and he is my insperation. BTW im 16 and decided to join the Marines when I was 10. SEMPER FI DO OR DIE OOOORAAAH
im 17 and leaving for basic after highschool, and im joining because of the respect, discipline, honor, and brotherhood, none of the reasons listed.
before looking into the marine corps, explore your options. i am 17, and enlisted to become a combat engineer. i joined, because of the brotherhood, pride, and because i wanted to become the best of the best. oorah!!!!
i think that becoming a marie is more than just a responsibility. It is a commitment. It is something that you have to have a burning soulful desire in your heart! I am fourteen years old and i know that i really wnat to be a marine no matter who tell me what! I am a fourteen year old female girl and i want to become a marineno matter what anybody else sasy thank you for listening!!! Peace and Happiness!!!
im 14 and thinking about joining the marines im mostly curios if i should join or not join my mom doesnt want me joining and my dad wants me to join because he got his pride from joining the army for 3 years
Easier? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I want to join not only because it is practically the family business in my family but because I want to be one of the few and the poud. to serve my country and protect the republic so many have died for to preserve and protect. Oh, and 15 here.
I’m Not Going To Lie Or Lie To Myself. These Reasons To Me Make More Than Perfect Since. Not Only To Join The Marines But The Military As A Whole. I’m 17 Years Old. I Am Young But A Very Old Soul. I Joined The Marines After Narrowing Down My Options. There Are Somethings The Recruiter Forgets To Mention. You Just Have To Be Semi Aware And Ask Questions. Its A Scary Thought To Alter Your Life Especially After High School. Not Everyone Has The Same Options. Some People Like My Self Have SHITTY Life Os. College Selling Drugs. Or Minimum Wage. Its Hard. I J
& Wen You Have Someone Willing To Do So Much. Your Left Optionless.
I am 16 and a girl. you guys are giving reasons to why you want to join. to be honest… i dont really even know why i want to join. i just do. i have for a while now, but i have been hesitant. i keep lookin stuff up about it, but it only scares me more… i want it. i want it bad, but idk. am i ready for it is my question… my dad is against it, but its my life not his. i just dont know what to expect..
These are bull statements i am enlisting to fight for my country and ensure that U.S. citizens can live freely!!i can care less what position i fill. I will get my job done.
those are good reasons on why a teen would want to join the Military. BUT they also know that it is not going to be a piece of cake, and even through many teens do think that. its better for the Marines to accept them; they are going to serve the country anyway and maybe there perspectives will change.
I am a 12 year old girl who has had the desire to be a marine since i was 9. I want to be a marine to serve my country, learn respect, and above all others things protect people. All that stuf about just wanting the guns, its not true. I dont care who tells me i cant be a marine, cuz i just wont listen.
please post your supporting evidence for this.. only reason number four seems valid. also I am wondering why you did not put ‘throw puppies’ on this. thank you
them 5 statements are not all true. i am 14 years old and i want to enlist in the marine corps. when i graduate highschool and im not doing it bc of them reasons . i want to do it bc i want to be bold and serve my country, family, county, and most of all serve my God by fighting for my country.
I am 15 and been planing on joining for a couple years now and it’s not for none the reasons above the reason I want to join is for my country and for this great country’s freedom
i want to join the marines because of the dicipline, being able to serve my country, rise up to the challenge, and earn the title of a U.S. Marine.
me and my cousin want to join the marines. we want to be bold, serve our country, protecting our people, serving our God, earning the title of a U.S.marine, and also we both are 14 and 15 years old.
I’m 18 years old I’m joining the Marines because they are the most prestige branch. For 4 years the thought has walkways been in the back of my mind. For most of my senior year I planned to go to college. Until I went to talk to a recruiter because I was bored on spring break. A “quick talk” as the recruiter put it turned in to a 3 hour conversation. Ever since then I have not been able to see my self going to college or the work force. My life will be the service and I can not wait to sign those papers and then get to step off the bus in Parris Island to begin what will make me the man I will be for the rest of my life.
Its your life. I’m 16 too and I want to join that Marines for 8 years now is because of the career, the history and also to serve the United States of America. I’m from Ireland and I have no connections over in the US. Your father doesn’t want his little girl joining because he doesn’t want to loose you. Its the same with my mother. My mam thinks its because I play too much video games ect. If I can’t serve the U.S of A. I’m joining the Irish Special Force but if I am joint the Marine Corps the position that I want to be is infantry. If you sure you want to enlist please make sure of the sacrafises your making to you home, you country and also to the Corps.
Yeah, I’ve never met a single person wanting to join the Marine Corps for those reasons. People who want to join the Marine Corps are a different breed of people.
i was a Marine in 1965 to 1969 was a machine gunner in nam the thing the marines did for me was TO BELEVE IN MYSELF and that was the best thing that could have happen to me-SEMPER FI
hey i just want to say thank-you for all that the marines have done for us and that i know one day i will become one for the right resoan and that reason is to protect the ones i love and to defend those around me
Im 15 years old and the thing is my whole went into the military but none went to the Marines so I want to prove something to my family that im not a little scrawny kid who just sits on his couch all day and does nothing im in JROTC I know what to except I went to Camp Pendleton this summer and say the enlisted training yeah it looks hard but im not scared
im 14 im a little afraid of water but i think that if i go in with good intentions ill make it i am a big guy but i sure as hell can run, the fact of the matter is the recruiters lie. What i think about when i think about joining the marines is i dont want to drown during bootcamp because i dont kno how to swim
iwant to join becuz i appriciate the uniform styles and i want to honor those in my past bloodline who have fought in the navy and marines im only 14 but i feel as though its my duty to honor them, myselfe and my country as a united states marine
I want to join the Marines and I’m 16. not to fight for “my country”, as my parents put it. I want to join to be able to personally say I defended their freedom. I want to fight for friends and family.
I’m 16 years old, and 17 soon, to be enlisted with pariental permission. I didn’t make this huge decision just because I love Call of Duty games, in fact I despise of all games of that sort of nature, seeing as they make it so people see a fallen colleague and brush it off like nothing even happened. I’ve heard that strong friendships are made in the forces, and I always wanted to be a part of one. I have a huge fascination in weaponry and engineering and already decided that I’d want to be a weapons engineer in the forces. It makes me sad to see 12 and 13 year olds so easily throwing their lives into this decision because of the media they’re exposed to.
I chose this because I have family that served on both sides, and it’s my turn now.
I’m twelve about to be thirteen I want to be a marine like family in the past, I’ve never had one my family members die in the marines but I’m am scared to die. I’m want to fight for my country and keep my people safe but I’m am scared to leave my family for ever I will miss them a lot I love them so much and also my people.
If your going to be joining the military keeping mind that your going to need to take the asvab test.
i m 13 turning 14 and i want to join the marines cause my dad was a sargent and was the first in my familey and i want to be the second and it would come with the country respecting me and i would have disipline and its honor to join becaue its the best of the best and i get to protect the country from terrorist and evry thing else
That’s not true I am only 12 and I want to join the marine corps 1 I want to fight for my country. 2 I want to stop those IED making people. 3 I want to help our troops come back. Semper Fidelis
Wow worst article I have ever read. I am retired Marine Corps. My school was paid for completely. Never paid anything. Also I did travel all over the world and never paid a single dime. Half the “myths” on the page are actually true.
I want to join because of the good citizenship shown in the army. It would seem awesome to comeback home to enjoy a good welcome back with your family. That you have served the country well and you will be proud of yourself to know you accomplish what you always wanted to.
I have had not only marines tell me the US ARMY is a joke , and we laugh at it ,but I have also talk to marines relatives who said the same things plus other insults. The brain washing of marines rubs off on their relatives ,and frankly I am sick of it ,and I am going to take physical action against the next marine who insults me I have had enough of their condescending remarks. It does not matter what size the marine is ,if he’s a lot bigger than me well I will introduce him to a 2×4 with screws sticking out of it , see how he likes being in the ICU for 3 weeks.Funny though the last marine who insulted me was one of theses honey I shrunk the marine corps types. You know 5-7 tall size 7 shoe weight 140 Lbs soaking wet
Honestly I’m only 12 and you realize it’s not a bad career because you can be an officer over 4 years in the army academy or marines whatever ever branch of the military you want to join I want to join the army and be an aviation officer it’s not a bad career and in 6 years you can be a warrant officer all you have to do is work and you can succeed in the military
I wanna join because I feel like I have a duty to serve the nation I was born in, the nation I respect, and the nation I will die in.
No one in my family has joined the united states because were mexican and not from here.
im 12 and its a descicion I will live up to.
I am currently 17 years old, will be 18 in 3 months, and I enlisted in the Marine Corps. Those of you that are thirteen, fourteen, maybe even fifteen should think about the commitment you are making to your country and the amount of work it is going to take in order to EARN the title of a United States Marine. Not much of what you see in movies is correct. There is so much more in the Marine Corps than what you believe. The Marine Corps is a brotherhood that can be stronger than your blood family. I have talked to several Marines about the enlistment process and with currently going through it myself I know how much of a challenge basic training will be. None of this should discourage anyone looking at enlisting in the Marine Corps, just please think about the type of commitment you are making.
We join up because the Marines provide the best that the Military has to offer. They represent everything my family stands for: honor, courage, and commitment. That’s not to say that every Marine represents these traits, but at least they are taught to.
When I dwell on the idea of the Marine Corps, I remember the greatest men in the world like Colonel John W. Ripley, Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, and Corporal Jason Dunham, all Marines who understood chivalry and bravery.
This article is a disgrace to your country and those who defend it. Whoever posted this should be drastically ashamed of themselves. None of us chose to be free; we fought to be free and every time you lay your head on your pillow, you should thank God that he has laid the immense responsibility of protecting you onto the patriotic shoulders of the Untied States Marines.
Semper Fidelis Warriors! Keep up the good fight!

Im 14 years old and Im a girl , I want to go to the marines because I want to serve for my country, every veterans day I sit in my school and listen to the men and women talk about there experiences when they talk each year I love to listen to them. I feel its my right as a American citizen to do my duty, even though there is a great chance I may not get to see my family or even come home. At least I can go with honors knowing im dying for your freedom.
I’m a 14 year old girl, I would like to join the marines to serve my county even if I die that doesn’t matter to me what matters to me is serving my country, and doing the right thing by my country by helping them fighting for our freedom, and just helping others. Others may thing joining the marines is just for fun or for show for just to get the benefits but i don’t really care about those things serving my country and knowing i did right by my country is all i ever need.
I am 12 and I want to join because it means serving my country, and this whole dying stuff is baloney. I dont know for sure, but the chances of dying are like one in a million
I want to join the Marines because I want to fight for our contury and help support our troops down on the ground who gets hurt and help the soldiers survive in the war so they can go back to their families and so they will be happy because he came home to see his family and so I can meet my family too how about you.
Pluse I am 14 years old
